Baer was born in Chicago and early in his career he was based in Germany, North Africa, and Paris. He returned to the US in 1940 and settled in San Francisco. After studying in Europe, Martin and his brother moved to Algeria where he undertook many works depicting the local topography and peoples. Baer had exhibited at the Avant Garde Gallery Jeune Peinture
