I am pretty certain this lacquered papier mache box was made to be used as a snuff box and dates to the late 19th or very early 20th century

6 7/8" long x 2 1/4" wide x 7/8" deep

the wood back of which shows through the front a bit along the top and bottom edges

with holes at both ends

These I know were found in the collection of an artist in Maine, and believe they date to the late 19th century or so. This is maybe my very favorite of all, but there is a diagonal crease visible I think it would mostly disappear once framed, but it is there.
