The film was Chaplin's (1889 1977) first talking picture. As well as directing and producing the film, Chaplin played a dual role in it, one of his characters being Hynkel, a parody of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. It was the only film of the period to satirise Hitler and Nazism. 'The Great Dictator' was nominated for five Oscars, but did not win any.
