which I purchased online from a seller who did not know anything about it--I was just immediately taken with the evocativeness of the portrait

One finds some similar that were made in Japan, but several others I found these along with are stamped Germany on the reverse, so I believe they are too, and I would guess date to the 1920s 40s or so. Smallish face sized: 5 15 16" t x 4 7 8" wide, measured straight across the back
