The Defender, 1895 Pen and Ink Ship Drawing pottery serving bowl made by The Embossing CompanyI've got a weakness for drawings of old ships, and this one struck me because it seemed ironic that such a bucolic looking boat would be called the Defender. A little research reveals that the Defender, a J Class racing yacht co owned by William K. Vanderbilt, was in fact the 1895 America's Cup winner. Perhaps Vanderbilt, skipper Henry C. Haff, and co owners Edwin Dennison Morgan and Charles Oliver Iselin are among tiny figures aboard it here! There
