The 'cuckow of Carolina and the chinkapin' mb-height 3693 they land their ship'Cuculus caroliniensis', the cuckow of Carolina, perched on a branch of the 'Castanea pumila Virginiana', the chinkapin shrub (Catesby's identifications; modern scientific names: Coccyzus americanus, the yellow billed cuckoo; Castanea pumila, the Allegheny chinquapin). Plate 9 from volume I of The natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, by Mark Catesby (London, 1731). Mark Catesby was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1733.
