I think these are pretty old and they've got a few layers of paint on them -- the back of the chair shows an old faded dark red
papered on the back and strung with a wire for hanging
I really like the combination of strong straight lines on the black-painted structure with the unpainted zig zag chip-carved decoration inside and in between
making me wonder if he isn't meant to represent a butler
Keep Hands OFF, G.R's First German Book for School and Home, 1870s sapolin gold leaf I think these are prettyOf course it is the "Keep hands OFF this Book" written by a GR in blue crayon on the inside front cover of this old German language school book that sold me on it, but then it was a delight to discover a few small drawings and crayon coloring on some of the geometric shapes scattered across its pages. And the printed matter itself is quite lovely, combining bits of arithmetic and geometry and penmanship and German language on each page. Some pages at
