The second Battle of Ypres was the only major offensive launched by the Germans on the Western Front in 1915. It was notable as being the first occasion during the war that poison gas was deployed. The Germans used chlorine gas against French positions on 22 April, inflicting heavy casualties and causing widespread panic.
