The obverse shows a woman (representing Columbia), armed with a sword, defending two other figures with a cloak, the upper contour of the medal bears the words SECOND NICARAGUAN CAMPAIGN, the exergue the dates 1926 1930, the reverse bears an eagle perched upon an anchor with sprigs of laurel in its claws, flanked by the words FOR SERVICE, inscribed above the eagle is UNITED STATES NAVY, on original red ribbon
